Life After Death: According to Catholic Teaching by Luiz Sérgio Solimeo
The desire of speaking about heavenly things and knowing what future life awaits us at death is inherent to human nature. If the thought of heaven fills us with joy, we must ponder all the possibilities opened for us at the time of death, that is, to consider what the Church calls the Four Last Things: Death, Judgment, Hell, and Heaven. We should think about the risk of eternal damnation and how terrible are the pains of Purgatory and Hell, since, as Scripture counsels, “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Ecclus. 1:16). For this reason this study about the future life, while still based on the teaching of the Church and writings of the doctors and theologians of the best reputation, also makes use of private revelations in order to make the text more attractive and intelligible lest it become a bit arid.
